Talking to lyricist Javed Akhtar, Amitabh Bachchan had told that he used to go to see Dilip Kumar’s films by borrowing money from friends during his college days.
Amitabh Bachchan, the megastar of the century, shared the screen with Dilip Kumar in the 1982 film Shakti. The pairing of both the stars was also well liked by the audience. Many stars considered Dilip Kumar as their inspiration. Same was the case with Amitabh Bachchan. Once Amitabh was asked about the reason behind coming to films, he took the name of Dilip Kumar. Along with this, he also narrated an anecdote from college days.
Amitabh Bachchan had told in an interview with Javed Akhtar, ‘Dilip sahib was behind my entry into films. I was very impressed by his work. There was really no answer to his performance. The films I had seen in the beginning were of Dilip Sahab. His Insaniyat was the first film I saw. After that I worked with him in Shakti. It is very difficult to describe how it feels when your Guru comes in front of you.
Amitabh became emotional: The megastar says, ‘I played his son in the film and told me that you have to speak dialogues after him. All this was completely astonishing to me. For any other actor it may be a minor issue, but for me it is not at all. I had seen his films after leaving college and class. I don’t know from where I stole money or asked for loans from friends. Because I used to watch the same film of his many times. Now in the same medium I was doing a film with him, so I got emotional and also felt very strange.
Autograph was sought from Dilip Kumar: Amitabh Bachchan shared an anecdote from the 1960s. During that time Dilip Kumar used to be a big star and Amitabh had no identity at that time. He had told, ‘Dilip sahib had come to a restaurant. He was very busy talking to the owner. After thinking for a long time, I asked for an autograph trembling. I didn’t get anything at that time. After a while a book was found, but he did not pay any attention to me and did not look at me.’
